Blogger Confessions// Weird Book Facts About ME

Every book blogger secretly has weird book confessions. Some are worse than others. I see these posts fly around a lot, and haven’t done one yet because I didn’t know if I had enough book related confessions to make. But then I realized I am a pretty weird person and I am sure some of these confessions are ~scandalous~.

1. I Used to Dog Ear Book Pages

I am diving right in with maybe one of the most controversial, divisive debates in the book world. YES, I used to dog ear. YES, I did it on library books. YES, I still do it if I don’t forget. I know, this makes me a HORRIBLE person because now I am ruining these perfectly pristine book pages. But think about it. Bookmarks can get lost. Pages (hopefully) won’t just fall out of the book! Also, I was pretty lazy. It was a lot of mental work to get in the habit of having a bookmark nearby and putting it in whenever I finish reading. Dog ear-ing came naturally. Plus, I wanted my books to have a nice, well-worn look.

2. I Used to Read the Last Page of a Book First

This one I will agree is HORRIBLE. But it was only a short phase, so bear with me! My mom told me when I was about ten or so that she used to do the same thing, so, looking up to my mom, I decided I would also read the last page of a book first. I can’t remember exactly what book it was (but chances are it was in the Little House in the Big Woods series or by Madeleine L’Engle), but one time I was reading the last page and it spoiled this huge, monumental death and I sat there for a while thinking, see Sydney? This is what you get for being impatient. And after that I haven’t read the last page first since.

3. If a Book Has a Pretty Cover, I Will Buy it in a Physical Copy.

And if it has an ugly/unattractive cover, I will buy it on ebook. This didn’t always used to be the case. I used to be totally TEAM KINDLE and would only buy eBooks. But then I got a book blog and saw all these pretty covers and my vain side took over and decided I just NEEDED these covers on my bookshelf for aesthetic purposes. But of course, most covers now are gorgeous or I only add good covers to my TBR so I end up buying most books in a physical form.

4. If the Book is Part of a Series, I Buy it in the Same Format as the Previous Books

This is the one exception to the rule. Some series I started before I was big into physical books, so I have them all on eBook. But when a new book in the series comes out, no matter HOW pretty the cover is, I will also buy it on eBook. To stay consistent. Sometimes this extends to authors as well. For example, I have no Kasie West or Morgan Matson books in physical form on my bookshelf (even though I have at least 4 of each and some new ones), and I have no Emery Lord in my Kindle library. I just started these authors one way, so I have to read them all the way through. There isn’t really a logical reason for this one, but just one of my quirks.

5. I Have At Least 12 Books Sitting on my Night Stand, Waiting to be Read

And by night stand I mean in piles haphazardly around my room. Again, I didn’t use to be this bad! Before book blogging I had a really good system going where I didn’t buy a book until I finished reading one, and I mostly reread. But then I was introduced to the blogosphere and all the amazing books out there and my TBR grew so much. And then I started going to bookstores more and binge buying, but then not having enough time to read them all. I have books out from SEPTEMBER, y’all. That is too long. And yet I still buy more because I just need them.

6. I Tend to Skim Books

A secret to my fast reading skills. I get pretty bored reading all the long descriptive paragraphs, so I skim. If I end up missing something, I just go back and read it more carefully. That’s why I like books with a lot of dialogue in it, because then it is less skimming. Sometimes though, this skill carries me through to action scenes, and then I get to a really intense battle and one of the characters is maybe going to die, and my eyes move WITHOUT ME TELLING THEM TO to the next page to see what happens to them. And then I curse myself when I see their fate and go back and read the battle scene much more carefully.

7. I Used To Judge Books by Their Characters’ Names

I was highkey a very judgmental book reader in middle school. I used to read the synopsis of the book, but if one of the characters had a name I didn’t like (like Greg or George or something old school like that) I would put it back. No matter what the plot was. It is a little horrible, actually.

8. There Are Only Two Books I Can Say That I’ve Actively DNFed

First off, actively DNF is a weird way to phrase it, because the active is kinda opposite of DNFing. But I mean that I tried, I really tried to get through these books, and I just couldn’t. No matter how many times I took a break then came back to them. I don’t tend to DNF books often either. What are these two books, you ask?? The Hobbit and The Secret Garden. Both classics, I KNOW. But the Hobbit I legitimately fell asleep during. Sure, there were some outside factors, but I fell asleep. End of story. As for The Secret Garden, I tried to read this SO MANY TIMES. It came in the same set as The Little Princess, and I loved The Little Princess, so I really tried to love The Secret Garden too. But something about it must have been too slow for me or I didn’t click or whatever, because I just could not finish it. Not even when I was assigned to read it for school.

Welp, eight is a weird number to end on but I couldn’t think of two more confessions so enjoy these ones! This post was actually pretty fun to write and it wasn’t that hard coming up with confessions which I find slightly troubling but oh well!
